Origami Heart Bookmark

If you're trying to encourage your kids to cut back on the sweets they consume, try folding origami heart bookmarks to pass out on Valentine's Day instead of distributing candy. You will need one sheet of square origami paper for each bookmark you want to make. The finished bookmarks are fun to decorate with stickers, which makes them a good choice if you can't find prepackaged Valentine cards that suit your child's interests.

As a parent, I feel very strongly about promoting literacy among children. If your budget allows for the expense, I encourage you to pass out age-appropriate books with your handmade bookmarks. You can often find children's books for just $1 at Dollar Tree stores. If your child brings home Scholastic Book Club fliers, these are another excellent source of $1 books.
